Pakistani Haris Aziz Named Among Top 10 AI Scientists in the World



Haris Aziz, BSc (Honours) Class of 2003, was recently named among ‘AI’s 10 to Watch‘ by the IEEE Intelligent Systems magazine. The list recognizes 10 researchers who are rising stars in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Haris is currently working as a senior researcher at Data61, Australia’s largest data innovation group which has been recently established by combining NICTA and CSIRO’s Digital Productivity business unit. He is also a conjoint senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

The winners in the ‘AI’s 10 to Watch‘, nominated by senior researchers in academia and industry, are chosen every two years by a committee consisting of members of advisory and editorial boards of IEEE Intelligent Systems. The magazine is a bimonthly publication of the IEEE Computer Society, the world’s leading computing membership organisation and the trusted source for a global workforce of technology leaders.

Haris was cited for his research at the intersection of economics and artificial intelligence, especially in a rapidly developing field called computational social choice. He was recognised for his work on the design of preference aggregation algorithms; mechanisms for multi-agent resource allocation; and models and algorithms for cost allocation and team formation using tools from cooperative game theory.

Haris is also an invited fellow of the Centre for Policy and Market Design, University of Technology Sydney, and was an invited professor at University Paris Dauphine. His research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence and economics, especially computational social choice and algorithmic game theory. Haris received a PhD in computer science from the University of Warwick, an MSc in Mathematics and Foundations of Computer Science from the University of Oxford and a BSc (Honours) in Computer Science from LUMS.
